Our first full day in Morocco is jam packed of activities and information. Our In-Country Consultant, Meriem, explains about many of the things that I have read about but gives additional insider information – tidbits about the cities, the government, culture, geography, religion, and language. I am excited to learn more about the aspect of language here in Morocco. Although Standard Arabic is in the constitution, we will come to find out that it the idea of language is one that causes many issues within the education system. It makes me reflect on the idea of my own district changing our bilingual program and my reason for leaving that program. Meriem addresses the status of women in society as well noting that it is a traditional, patriarchal culture. There is a separation of sexes in private areas and in some cafes, etc. However, there are also modern relationships. With time roles seem to be changing some. Overall, I think that all work is based on the relationships established and how much work is put into building these – whether that is on the personal or professional levels. Very much reminding me of my Peace Corps time and efforts.
